A powerful 2 inch step

Today I took a step. A small step of about 2 inches. That step was onto the scale at Exempla Lutheran Hospital for Weigh and Win.

I'm a community leader. I'm a mom. I'm a wife, daughter, sister, friend, boss, church elder and many other roles. And I'm overweight. I've been athletic and healthy my whole life. I started slipping about 6 years ago. I lost a lot of weight and kept it off in 2010-2011 and then I wonderfully discovered we were pregnant.  I gained weight and had a healthy pregnancy.  But once the baby came, it took longer to heal than I expected. Then my husband got injured and I had more baby duties than expected.

All this to say that I have not been working out and losing the baby weight as much as I'd like. My daughter is 5 months old and it is time to get real.

Today I was sitting at a Leadership Committee for LiveWell Wheat Ridge. They asked for volunteers to do a letter to the editor on obesity, one of the large health concerns we are working to address. However, I didn't feel that I could volunteer because I am not currently at a healthy weight.

At the same meeting, Carol from Exempla Lutheran explained the new Weigh and Win program. They have a kiosk station in their lobby.  You step on, weigh in, and then keep weighing in quarterly. If you progress on your weight loss goals, they pay you. That's right. A $75 Visa prepaid card and more incentives can be yours.

That was a nudge at just the right time. I went down the stairs and took exactly two minutes to enroll myself at the kiosk and log my initial weight with my two inch step onto the scale.

If you are interested, I encourage you to Weigh and Win. It's free and you have the opportunity to make some money while you reach your goals. Not a bad deal.

I have been thinking a lot about health and time. Both are precious resources in this life and I am about to embark on some changes to better manage both my health and time.
